Numerical Simulation of Unreinforced Masonry Buildings with Timber Diaphragms

چکیده

Though flexible diaphragms play a role in the seismic behaviour of unreinforced masonry buildings, effect connections between floors and walls is rarely discussed or explicitly modelled when simulating response such buildings. These are most commonly timber made planks beams, which supported on recesses can slide friction resistance reached. Using equivalent frame models, we capture effects both diaphragm stiffness finite strength wall-to-diaphragm To do this, use newly developed macro-element able to simulate in-plane out-of-plane non-linear springs wall-to-wall connections. As an unretrofitted case study, model building shake table, large displacements. We then three retrofit interventions: Retrofitted diaphragms, connections, show that strengthening alone ineffective capacity connection exceeded. This also means modelling unstrengthened as having infinite leads unrealistic box-type behaviour. particularly important if should global local failure modes.

Numerical Modelling of Timber Braced Frame Masonry Structures (Dhajji Dewari)

This paper presents numerical modeling technique for Dhajji-Dewari structures (timber-braced rubble stone masonry), and its application for the evaluation of in-plane force-deformation capacity of Dhajji wall panels of different configuration of bracings. Dhajji structures are mainly composed of vertical and horizontal timber posts and braced using diagonal bracings and horizontal studs. Wall o...

Flexural Tension in Unreinforced Masonry

Unreinforced masonry is that in which the tensile strength of the masonry is taken into consideration in design. Allowable out-of-plane tensile stress values are a function of the mortar type, such as Portland cement/lime mortar vs. masonry cement mortar or type M or S mortar vs. type N mortar. The allowable tensile stress is also a function of the masonry construction, such as tension parallel...

Effective stiffness of unreinforced brick masonry walls

Code design of Unreinforced Masonry (URM) buildings is based on elastic analysis, which requires as input parameter the effective stiffness of URM walls. Current approaches estimate the effective stiffness as fixed ratio of the gross sectional stiffness but comparisons with experimental results have shown that this does not yield satisfactory predictions. In this paper, a recently developed ana...

Testing unreinforced masonry structures at reduced scale

When testing multi-story structures on a shaking table, most testing facilities require a reduced scale model. Producing scale test units at small scale is particularly challenging for unreinforced masonry structures. Previous work by other researchers showed that scaling of units and mortar joints is mandatory in order to obtain for the reduced scale masonry failure modes, which are similar to...

Seismic Design of Box-Type Unreinforced Masonry Buildings Through Direct Displacement-Based Approach

In the last decade, displacement-based seismic design procedures have been recognised to be effective alternatives to force-based design (FBD) methods. Indeed, displacement based design (DBD) may allow the structural engineer to get more realistic predictions of local and global deformations of the structure, and hence damage, under design earthquakes. This facilitates the achievement of perfor...
